3.2 Why API Key is Needed
What is an API Key?
An API Key (Application Programming Interface Key) is a unique string, like your "account password", used for:
- Authentication - Proves you are a paying user
- Usage Statistics - Records your usage
- Billing - Deducts fees based on usage
- Security Control - Prevents unauthorized use
Why Purchase Separately?
Each AI service provider operates independently:
- Each company has its own technology and costs
- Needs to pay for servers, computing power, R&D, etc.
- Requires separate account systems to manage users
- Has different pricing strategies and service quality
Analogy:
This is like using different streaming services (Netflix, Disney+); each platform requires a separate subscription because the content and services they provide are independent.
Security
- API Keys are stored only on your local device
- MiniTavern does not upload your keys
- Conversation requests are sent directly to AI service providers
- MiniTavern cannot access your conversation content
